Soap Chips to Soap Cakes

I think I’ve posted about this before, but in these tough economic times, it bears repeating and I’ve given a much better set of instructions on how I do this.

I posted this on my new Frugal Simplicity Blog and decided to post it here as well.

I don’t like bars of soap when they get down to this point.  This is about the time they break in half and are a pain to use.  I can’t bring myself to throw them away either, because that is a huge waste.  There’s a bar + in these chips.


So, here’s what I do…..

I put my pink rubber gloves on for this project.


I get out my cheese grater and a large stainless steel bowl.  Any good sized mixing bowl will work for this.

I use Ivory soap and it breaks up fairly easily, but some of the softer milled soaps require grating.  I bust up the Ivory and grate the rest until it looks about like this.


Then, I get my food processor out and dump this mixture into it.   I pulse it until it turns into a coarse grainy texture like this.


Then, I begin adding water to this a small amount at a time until I get a rather thick pasty texture.  You don’t want it to be too wet, because you will need to form it into shapes.  Too dry and it will crumble when it dries. It should look about like this.


Once you get a good consistency, scrape this out onto a piece of aluminum foil and begin shaping this mixture into cookies, bars, or whatever shape you want.  Make sure you pack them fairly tightly so they don’t fall apart when they dry out.

Here’s how mine look when I’m done. 


Let them air dry for a while until you can pick them up and they’re no longer slimy.  Wrap them in wax paper and store them for use as hand soap or for bathing.  Never waste soap chips again.  I save the chips for about 6 months and only do this about twice a year, but the frequency will depend on how many people are in your household.
